Romney’s wife sells his charming Image

He will not fail – She says

Mitt Romney’s ‘‘secret weapon’’, was unleashed at the official launch of his presidential election campaign yesterday.

Wife Ann took to the stage at the Republican convention in Florida to try to turn around his stiff and aloof image with voters.

Wearing a red dress and standing in front of photographs of her family, she received extended applause at the party convention that officially nominated her husband to face President Barack Obama in November.

Saying she wanted to talk not about politics, but about ‘‘love’’, she related the early days of their courtship as well as the hardships, including her battle with multiple sclerosis.

Mr Romney’s campaign has largely focused on the economy and his business skills, but Tuesday’s effort painted him in a more humane light, something critics have said has been lacking so far.

‘‘I can only stand here tonight, as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, an American, and make you this solemn commitment: this man will not fail,’’ she said.

Other speakers noted Mr Romney’s business background as a compelling reason for voters to cast their ballots for him, and pressed home the slogan that he was the candidate who ‘‘will not fail’’.

The nomination came a day later than planned, displaced by the approach of Hurricane Isaac bearing down on New Orleans.
